Our Tree Has Been to Space!

NASA selected organizations across the nation to receive special聽鈥淢oon Tree鈥澛爏eedlings that traveled around the Moon during the聽Artemis I mission in 2022. We are thrilled to share that the聽Fulford Center聽was chosen as one of the very first sites to receive one of these historic seedlings.

The tree was planted at the Fulford Center on聽Tuesday, May 7 at 1 p.m., with a full celebration planned for聽August.

鈥淭ogether, NASA and the Forest Service will deliver a piece of science history to communities across our nation,鈥 said聽Mike Kincaid, associate administrator for NASA鈥檚 Office of STEM Engagement. 鈥淭hrough this partnership, future explorers, scientists, and environmentalists will have the opportunity to nurture and be inspired by these Artemis artifacts in the community where they live, work, and learn.鈥

Rooted in the legacy of the original Moon Trees carried by NASA astronaut聽Stuart Roosa聽during聽Apollo 14, the Artemis I Moon Trees traveled聽270,000 miles from Earth聽aboard the聽Orion spacecraft. A variety of tree species鈥攊ncluding聽sycamores, sweetgums, Douglas firs, loblolly pines,聽and聽giant sequoias鈥攎ade the journey around the Moon.

The聽East Georgia Campus in Swainsboro聽received a聽loblolly pine聽to nurture and grow for future generations to enjoy.
